Weak water pressure at the taps is annoying — and sometimes a sign of a bigger problem. The causes vary, and there can be more than one at the same time, so it is worth checking step by step.
Only one tap is affected
The cause is usually local: the aerator (the small filter at the end of the tap) or the shower head is blocked by limescale, which is common in Luxembourg’s hard water. Unscrew it, soak it in white vinegar for a few hours, rinse and refit it.
The whole home is affected
- Check that the main water valve is fully open — it is sometimes left half-closed after work.
- Ask your neighbours: if they have the same problem, it may come from the public network. Contact your commune.
- If you have a pressure reducer or a water softener, it may need adjusting or servicing.
When to call a plumber
If the pressure dropped suddenly, if you hear water running when all taps are closed, or if you see damp patches, there may be a leak or a blocked pipe. Close the main valve and call us: we find the cause and fix it.
